The Other Hot Corner

Among bullpen issues, another hot topic with Yankee fans is the situation at first base. With the release of Andy Phillips, and his eventual signing with the Reds, it appears that the Yanks plan to move forward with a platoon of Wilson Betemit, Jason Giambi, and Shelley Duncan. We've all heard the debate regarding who gets the job in what situations countless times, so I'm going to focus on something else: What do we do in 2009?

Clearly what we have at first base is not a long term solution, I think we can all agree there. The quick answer for most fans is "Mark Teixeira!" While I agree that signing Tex would be an excellent move, especially given all the bad contracts that come off our books at the end of the 2008 season, banking on signing Tex is a dangerous line of thinking. Resting all first base hopes on what will prove to be a very competitive war for his services is hardly considered smart baseball.

So what, exactly, are our options? I recently read an article on another Yankee blog addressing this very question. Its an interesting read, and I encourage you all to check it out here.

Ryan Garko is certainly an interesting option. We could use a right handed hitter, as we have plenty of lefties, and Garko has pretty decent power. He's young (27), and in two years of service, Garko has hit .292 and .289, respectively. In 50 games in 2006, Garko his 7 homers, which is on pace for 22-23 homers in a full season. In 2007, Garko hit 21 bombs in 138 games. His splits are pretty good too, hitting .310 against lefties, and .281 against righties.

Garko isn't the best fielder in the world, but he is better than Giambi, and maybe Duncan (although his fielding at first is still kind of a question mark). I don't believe the asking price will be too high either. Maybe 2-3 mid level guys, and his contract is dirty cheap, making under $400,000 last year.

If our platoon isn't working out at by the end of July for whatever reason (slumps, injuries, etc.), it sure wouldn't hurt to see what the Indians want for him. And if not, I believe Cashman should definitely make a few phone calls regarding Garko next off season. Bottom line is that we don't have much in our farm system for first base. Juan Miranda may get a shot, but he's defense is pretty abysmal from what I've heard, and he has a pretty good shot of not panning out. There are possibilities of Jeter or Posada moving to first in a couple years, but nobody knows how that will work out either. In the meantime, Ryan Garko has proven to be effective at the major league level, and he wouldn't clean out of farm system or take over our payroll.

Feel free to disagree with me, I look forward to hearing some other takes on the future of first base.

Hey, Justin!

Here are some of my thoughts regarding the Yankee first base situation in 2009...

Well, like you said on your Post, Ryan Garko is an interesting option for the Yankees to consider signing as their first baseman for 2009, and maybe for another 4 or 5 years after that....

But, in my view, just like all the other options you have listed, they all fall somewhere down on the list behind the "first" and most obvious and important option,
Mark Teixeira!

I know Teixeira's agent is Scott Boras; and, his asking price is going to be in the 8-year $175M - $185 Million range...but, in my opinion, Mark Teixeira is the perfect fit for the Yankees over the next 8 years!

Just think about the following Yankee infield [with Tex at 1B] from the year 2009 - 2015...

1B Teixeira
2B Cano
3B A-Rod
SS Jeter

That's an All-Star infield that will be very dominant for many years, and will hopefully help the Yankees win many World Champonships over that time period!

Take care, Justin!

I agree Jimmy, Teixeira is easily the best option, I doubt anyone can dispute that given that he hits for average, is capable of 30-40 homers, and has gold glove defense.

I am simply throwing out Garko's name because as awesome as Tex would be, it is going to be quite the bidding war next year. And you've got to believe the Braves are going to try to lock him up.

It will do the Yankee universe well to consider the "what ifs" in this scenario...namely what if Tex never hits free agency, or what if he signs elsewhere.

Hey Jimmy,

Not sure exactly how old Jeter is, but we can't count on him for too many more years at SS. He's losing his range (maybe 3rd?). It's still a good infield, but nothing lasts forever. Definitely first base is a priority after this year. Can't wait for Giambi to be gone!

Justin,

One thing we can all agree on is that Jason Giambi will not be back with the Yankees in 2009.

After this season, the Yanks will be considering many different options to fill the first base position for 2009 and beyond...

Mark Teixerira and Ryan Garko will be two of the top options. Maybe, Juan Miranda will be ready to take over a first. But, a move will be made!

So, we should all look forward to another exciting off-season next winter. It will be a lot easier to make any decision regarding first base, if the Yankees win it all in 2008!

side note: In 2008, the Yankees need to have Jason Giambi play about 100-120 games at first [and, the rest of his games at DH]. This will free-up the DH spot which will allow the Yankees to have Damon in left, and Matsui as DH for as many games as possible this year....Having Giambi, Damon, and Matsui in the Yankee lineup on a regular basis this year [if all are healthy], give the Yankees their strongest everyday lineup! The key is: hopefully, they all stay healthy!!!

Great Post, Justin!

Jimmy

P.S. Finally, the Santana saga is over!...The bottom line: Santana did not go to the Red Sox; He is out of the American League; and, the Yankees did not have to give up any of their great young players!!!...

Like I said in comments I made on "Bombers Beat"...

THIS IS THE BEST NEWS OF THE OFF-SEASON !!!

Only 15 days until Spring Training!

Think Spring!

Take care, Justin!

Rob,

Well, it will be interesting to see how long Derek Jeter will play Short for the Yankees.

Jeter turns 34 in June of this year, and still has three years left on his 10-year, $189 Million contract [that he signed at the start of the 2001 season]. So, Derek Jeter will be the Yankee shortstop for at least the next three years [ 2008, '09, '10 ].

With that said, I do think the Yankees will sign Jeter to a Five-Year extension sometime before or during the 2009 season, which will keep the "Captain" as a Yankee through the 2015 season.

In 2015, Jeter will be 41, and this will probably be the final season of his Hall of Fame, Life-Long Yankee career.

Yes, Derek Jeter did lose some range last year [partly because of some nagging injuries througout the year]. But, as far as I'm concerned, I think Jeter is very capable of playing as the starting Yankee shortstop over the next 7-years. He's a hard worker, and keeps himself in shape, and his production at the plate continues to remain consistent. If he stays healthy, I feel it should be Jeter himself who will let Yankee Management know when [and, if] it is time for the shortstop position be given to another player. Until that time comes, I consider the "Captain" Derek Jeter, the one and only starting Yankee shortstop!

Only time will tell!

Take care, Rob!
